about
Decided to write a little about section on this since it is based on a philosophical theory called the Abillene Paradox.
From Wikipedia:
""In the Abilene paradox, a group of people collectively decide on a course of action that is counter to the preferences of many or all of the individuals in the group.[1][2] It involves a common breakdown of group communication in which each member mistakenly believes that their own preferences are counter to the group's and, therefore, does not raise objections, or even states support for an outcome they do not want. A common phrase relating to the Abilene paradox is a desire to not "rock the boat". This differs from groupthink in that the Abilene paradox is characterized by an inability to manage agreement.[3]""
The first verse sets up the story about trying to figure out how to do what others want, even if you don't want to do it. You offer anyway
The second verse is about figuring out that you constantly do things for others rather than do what you want to do. The lyrics "dumb to the words or deaf to the tone" are about people being tone-deaf in the social sense, not literal. For instance, when people can tell you don't want to do something but push anyway.
Since this theory involves the city of Abilene in Texas we ended it with a texas swing vibe :)
lyrics
V1
Welli it's daybreak, rock and roll
I'm tryin' to stay in tune with another soul
and that Sun shines down on you,
think about the things that they wanna do
and your own mind starts to unwind on you
and your darkness tends to shine on through
Chorus
I never knew
I never seen this kind of place
I never knew about Abilene
Out in the blue
Out in the wild west scenery
I never knew about Abilene
V2
Well the Sun's down back at home
are you dumb to the words or deaf to the tone
I can feel my heart again
I'm tired of loanin' it out to all my friends
Aint this what they wanted to do?
No soul desired this, that's true
Chorus
I never knew
I never seen this kind of place
I never knew about Abilene
Out in the blue
Out in the wild west scenery
I never knew about Abilene
V3
Welli it's daybreak, rock and roll
I'm tryin' to stay in tune with another soul
I can feel my heart again
I'm tired of loanin' it out to all my friends
Aint this what they wanted to do?
No soul desired this, that's true
Chorus
I never knew
I never seen this kind of place
I never knew about Abilene
Out in the blue
Out in the wild west scenery
I never knew about Abilene
